what is the Kurdish Factor?
In the north of Iraq, the Kurdish minority is largely unknown to the Western world. The Kurds embrace Western ideals, and their socially progressive and tolerant culture is in sharp contrast to the status quo of intolerance that continues to destabilize the Middle East. It's no surprise that forces of intolerance work to derail Kurdish ambitions, but, ironically, governments of the free world are equally guilty. Regardless, the persistent ambitions of this obscure minority in Iraq will impact every man, woman and child in the free world.
About the Project
The Kurdish Factor is a documentary project five years in the making. Ragtown Media traveled to the Kurdish region of northern Iraq to follow doctors, families, and everyday people living inside one of the most misunderstood cultures in the world. The Kurds are progressive, tolerant, and deeply connected to Western ideals - a reality that rarely makes it into mainstream media coverage of the Middle East.
Our Role
Ragtown Media handled all production on this project, including directing, cinematography, on-location interviews, and post-production editing. Producing long-form documentary content in northern Iraq required extensive pre-production planning, local coordination, and the ability to build trust with subjects in a region where outside cameras are not always welcomed.
Why This Story
Five years of filming. One region that almost nobody in the Western world knows exists in the way it actually does. The Kurdish Factor is the kind of project that only works if you are willing to go there, stay long enough to earn access, and let the story come from the people living it rather than from the outside looking in.
